What Janmashtami means

Janmashtami is the eighth lunar day of the dark half of Bhadrapada, the night Shri Krishna appeared. Devotees fast through the day and keep vigil until midnight, when the infant Krishna is welcomed with bhajans, a cradle and the Makhan (Fresh Butter) he loved.

The Bansuri (Bamboo Flute), Krishna’s flute, is the call of the Divine that every soul hears within in deep meditation. Saints describe the prison of Mathura as the body and mind in which the Lord is born when the Guru gives true knowledge, and the opening of its doors as liberation.
