What Kumbh Mela means

The Kumbh Mela (Gathering of the Sacred Pitcher) is held in turn at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. At Prayagraj the pilgrims bathe at the Triveni Sangam (Confluence of Three Rivers). The story behind it is the churning of the ocean, when a pitcher (kumbha) of Amrit (Nectar of Immortality) appeared and drops fell at these four places.

Saints have long spoken of an inner Triveni and an inner nectar: the meeting of the inner light, sound and nectar experienced in meditation through Brahm Gyan (Direct Internal Awakening / Self-Realization). The Maanas Snan below is a guided reflection on that inner bath; it is not a replacement for any ritual and needs nothing but a quiet place to sit.

A note on dates: 2026 is not a Maha Kumbh year. The last Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj was held in 2025. This page will carry the dates of the next Kumbh only once they are announced.
