Lohri

Lohri, the Sacred Harvest Fire

On the coldest nights of January, families gather round a bonfire, offer sesame and jaggery into the flames and sing. Offer your own handful into the fire: let a negativity burn away.

What Lohri means

Lohri is the winter festival of Punjab, kept on the eve of Makar Sankranti, when the Sun turns north and the days begin to lengthen. Farmers give thanks for the sugarcane harvest and the ripening wheat; Til & Gur (Sesame & Jaggery), peanuts and popcorn are offered into the fire and shared.

The fire is also an inner image. As the seed burns, the seeker offers the habits and resentments that keep the heart cold. The saints call the knowledge of the Self a fire that burns old karma: it is lit within through Brahm Gyan (Direct Internal Awakening / Self-Realization), and tended by daily Sadhna (Daily Meditation Practice).
