What Maha Shivratri means

Maha Shivratri falls on the fourteenth night of the dark half of Phalguna. Devotees fast, offer water, milk and Bilva (Sacred Bael Leaf) leaves, and keep vigil through the four prahars (A Watch of the Night) of the night.

Shiva is the stillness beneath every movement; the Damru (Shiva’s Hand Drum) sounds the rhythm from which creation flows. For the meditator the night is an invitation: when the mind becomes still, the inner light and the Anhad Naad (The Primordial Unstruck Resonance) that Brahm Gyan (Direct Internal Awakening / Self-Realization) reveals become clear. Waking through the night is a picture of waking from ignorance.
